University – with references and summaries in English and Dutch. i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have received tremendous assistance and encouragement from several people during my PhD studies in both the Netherlands and Zimbabwe. Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to Prof. dr. A.M.J. Meijerink who accepted the challenge of supervising a student who was going to spend most of the time away from ITC, knowing fully well problems associated with such an arrangement. Several discussions we had with Prof Meijerink and his comments on several drafts of this thesis have been very illuminating. At all stages of preparing this thesis Prof Meijerink went out of his way to provide me with the necessary support. I am most grateful to Prof. dr. A. Stein for accepting to be my promotor. Prof Stein meticulously went over several drafts of this thesis, and each time I handed some material for his consideration, I always looked forward to receive his comments. Prof H.H.G. Savenije, my co-promotor, encouraged me to embark on a PhD on several occasions we met in Africa, and I am most grateful for the assistance he has provided. He always created time for discussions during his short but busy visits to the University of Zimbabwe. who kindly assisted me on rainfall-runoff modelling. The Institute of Water Research provided me with an office, and this is sincerely acknowledged. Zimbabwe, MEPP Project Director) were instrumental in encouraging me to start on a PhD. Dr Huizing went out of his way organizing my several visits to ITC. His comments which he termed " layman comments " on my thesis were very encouraging. To both Herman and Charles, thank you. The support provided by my colleagues in the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Zimbabwe, is greatly appreciated. They took over my teaching obligations despite the department not having a full staff complement. Prof C.C. Mutambirwa's encouragement, and comments are greatly appreciated. Dr Pieter van der Zaag at the University of Zimbabwe has been very supportive over the years. He translated the English Summary of this thesis into Dutch, and I am very grateful for all the assistance that Pieter has provided. Sam Kusangaya and Tinos Madondo worked tirelessly even during ii off-working hours capturing data, and I am grateful for their assistance. The University of Zimbabwe is thanked for granting me leave to undertake my PhD studies. Mhlanga and Itai made …

Estimation of Runoff Peak Flow by El-Hames Empirical Method for Ungauged Catchments: A Case Study Iranshahr

In this paper, the El-Hames empirical method was used to determine the peak runoff flow in Iranshahr catchment. The El-Hames method is based on morphological parameters and SCS Curve Number of the studied area. The implementing was processed by collecting the required data including soil type and vegetation cover, land use maps, digital elevation model and satellite images from the associated i...

Estimation of the Relative Severity of Floods in Small Ungauged Catchments for Preliminary Observations on Flash Flood Preparedness: A Case Study in Korea

An increase in the occurrence of sudden local flooding of great volume and short duration has caused significant danger and loss of life and property in Korea as well as many other parts of the World. Since such floods usually accompanied by rapid runoff and debris flow rise quite quickly with little or no advance warning to prevent flood damage, this study presents a new flash flood indexing m...

Regionalisation of Rainfall-Runoff Models

A new approach to regionalisation for prediction of flow characteristics in ungauged catchments is presented. If flows in ungauged catchments are to be predicted using calibrated rainfall-runoff models, regional relationships between the parameters of such models and catchment attributes must be determined. This is only possible with parsimonious models (fewer than about 7 parameters), and even...

Improving the flood prediction capability of the Xinanjiang model in ungauged nested catchments by coupling it with the geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph

Improving the predictive capabilities of rainfall-runoff models in ungauged catchments is a challenging task but has important theoretical and practical significance. In this study, we investigated the predictive capabilities of the conceptual Xinanjiang model (XAJ), which is widely used for flood forecasting and simulation in China, in ungauged catchments. We further produced a hybrid rainfall...

Design Flood Estimation in Ungauged Catchments: Quantile Regression Technique And Probabilistic Rational Method Compared

Estimation of design floods in ungauged catchments is frequently required in hydrological practice and is of great economic significance. The most commonly adopted methods for this task include the Probabilistic Rational Method, the U.S. Soil Conservation Service Method, the Index Flood Method and the U. S. Geological Survey Quantile Regression Technique. The Probabilistic Rational Method has b...

Topological and canonical kriging for design flood prediction in ungauged catchments: an improvement over a traditional regional regression approach?

In the United States, estimation of flood frequency quantiles at ungauged locations has been largely based on regional regression techniques that relate measurable catchment descriptors to flood quantiles. More recently, spatial interpolation techniques of point data have been shown to be effective for predicting streamflow statistics (i.e., flood flows and low-flow indices) in ungauged catchme...
